Edible Garden Setup And Consideration

Growing edibles in HDB flats has its limitation due to environment and also space constraints.

Environment Constraints:

  • Sunlight - Due to flat facing, there may have little or no sunlight so it is not possible to grow edibles unless you grow using grow lights, meaning grow indoors. Lucky my flat facing has sunlight at the stairway.
  • Wind - Due to height of flats and surrounding flats, there may have strong winds which sometimes fell pots if they are not heavy enough or the plants grows to high.
  • Rain - If there is heavy rain, it may knock down the seedlings since they are still young and unable to be upright during heavy rain.
  • Pests And Diseases - There is limited pests since growing in HDB flats but does not mean there is none. Sometimes the pests comes with the plants or soil. Pests such as snails, scales and mealybugs.
Space Constraints:
  • The only space available is the corridor or stairways. With space limitation, you cannot have wide pots obstructing the pathway.
With the above considerations, I have done the following setup to work around the constraints.
  • Use Glass Panel to blow strong wind and rain. These glass panel are from shelves of discarded fridge. They are better than plastic and either you secure them using heavier pots or nylon strings on railing. Cleaning them is easy using newspaper to wipe. Low maintenance for me.
  • Use long pots as we can grow more within the same pot.
