Decision To Start Growing Edibles (Bayam, Chinese Spinach) At HDB Flat

This is not the first time growing edibles at the stairs of HDB flats. I have little success in growing chilli padi, white bitter gourd and Capsicum plants before but just for the fun of it, no intention to grow edibles for long term consumption.

Since NParks gave out vegetable seeds to encourage Singaporeans to grow their own vegetables (home gardening) and even though I have the intention, I did not put it into action as I do not have space and equipment to do it. However, I managed to dumpster dive some small long pots from funeral flowers and a pack of used potting soil, so finally I decided to give it a try some months back.

I decided to try out Bayam (Green) [Amaranthus species] since I can use to stir-fry or cook with porridge. I initially sow the lst batch of seeds in the medium long pot below. However, since the potting soil I have added uneaten spoiled grapes for composting, the soil collapse and most seeds don't germinate. I managed to have 3 seedlings but sadly only 2 survived. The two seedings grow into big and strong Bayam plants and I have harvested enough to stir-fry the over-sized leaves. The current picture below shows after I harvested the bigger leaves.

Medium Long Pot With 1st And 2nd Batch Of Bayam Plants

After I sow the 2nd batch of Bayam (Green) seeds in the medium long pot, the success rate is quite high. Some seedlings died as they were fallen during watering. I let the seedlings grow bigger before I try to transplant them and also preparing small long pots (Picture below).

So far I have been trying to transplant the Bayam (Green) seedlings and hoping they can grow big enough to provide me constant supply of leaves for me to stir-fry or cook with porridge for a while.
